After years of speculation and debates, the World Health Organization recently added cellphones to the list of factors that may cause cancer in humans. Yes, cellphones!!!
Usage of mobiles increases risk of cancer.
This addition has been based on the evidence obtained from clinical studies such as the InterPhone Study. These studies suggest that over use of mobiles may increase chances of Glioma, a rare brain tumor.
No doubt, the harm caused by use of mobile phones may be minimal, but this research, has led to cell phones being added to a category list of “possibly carcinogenic to humans” factors along with 226 other items.
However, the Director of the WHO, added that more research is required over this subject before a conclusive statement can be made.
The cancer community is however not yet fully convinced. Some cancer experts, not engaged in these research have a relaxed approach towards this classification. They feel that research has yet not proven the harm that cell phones can cause to humans.
WHO experts suggest that mobile users should take suitable care to avoid any risk. They are advised to keep a mobile phone’s antenna away from their heads and in case of men away from their genitalia. This can be done by using hands free options wherever possible, text options for communication where talking can be avoided or to use belt clippers for the phone instead of stuffing them in your pant pockets
